CHARLIE HOORNAERT
“In a world where everything moves so fast, I have the ability to stop time, to freeze it, or simply to contemplate it. For me, that’s a superpower.”
A self-taught photographer based in Mexico since 2022, Charlie Hoornaert explores the beauty of the moment, everyday life, and human connection through a deeply sensitive and intuitive approach. His eye, honed by years of silent observation and rigorous practice, seeks beauty in ordinary details: a shadow, a light, a fleeting gesture.
Born in August 1985 in Roncq, in northern France, Charlie grew up alongside his two brothers. From an early age, he stood out for his contemplative and dreamy nature. Straying from academic norms, he preferred family walks, observing the world around him… and looking at the photographs taken by his grandfather, an amateur photographer. At the time, images intrigued him, yet felt distant, almost sacred.
In 2007, he entered the Non-Commissioned Officers’ School in Saint-Maixent. His first paychecks allowed him to buy an SLR camera—a revelation. Photographing by instinct, he gradually shaped his vision through experience, even though technical mastery still eluded him. It was through composition and framing that he discovered his first visual language.
The year 2012 marked a turning point when his partner gifted him specialized photography courses in Paris. The technical tools he acquired unlocked an entire visual grammar. From then on, he never left home without his camera, marveling at everything: grazing light, urban textures, unexpected reflections. He developed a visual language that is both instinctive and precise, deeply infused with humanism.
Seeking a more organic way of working, this evolution fostered a more tactile and sensory relationship with the image, while refining his digital post-processing—what he considers his “personal darkroom.” His style became increasingly defined, balancing understated poetry with an engaged perspective on the world.
In 2022, he settled in Mexico with his family. It was here that his work truly flourished: street photography, portraits, cultural events, and personal series. He captures the vibrant energy of everyday Mexican life, always with the intention of suspending time. He is also involved in charitable projects, including volunteer portrait work for the Lázaro Association, and photographic documentation of cancer survivors climbing Mexican peaks with Cimas de la Esperanza (Peaks of Hope)—a deeply personal project following the loss of his father to cancer at the age of 55.
His commitment also extends to education. He teaches photography to teenagers and adults with a strong belief in making the medium accessible, encouraging each individual to develop their own vision rather than surrendering to automatic processes. For him, photography is a tool of emancipation—a way to reconnect with reality and to observe it through a singular lens.
Influenced by a contemplative and profoundly human approach, Charlie Hoornaert views photography as an act of gentle resistance: slowing down, feeling, translating. He explores movement, shifts in perspective, and the wonder found in textures, light, and ephemeral presences. His images do not seek to impress, but to move.

A photographer of the moment and of the intangible, Charlie Hoornaert seeks to freeze those fragments of life that often go unnoticed, building bridges between the intimate and the universal. In his own way, he stops time—not to escape the world, but to love it more.
